Nicodemus was once a human who was a true believer in Christ. After Jesus was crucified, he and Joseph of Arimathea dressed his body and sealed him in the tomb. After the Resurrection, Nicodemus went to Greece, where he was attacked and turned by the vampire Iacchus. But because he had looked on the face of Christ, he became immune to holy symbols. Shortly after he was turned, he changed his name to Nathaniel, leaving Nicodemus as a martyr.

Between the time of his turning and the present, Nathaniel wandered the world doing as he pleased. He turned a girl named Rose in 1486, but after her death in 1600, he replaced her with a priest-in-training named Elijah Harlowe. The two remained together for a while, but eventually Elijah went mad and Nathaniel abandoned him. In 1916 during the Battle of Delville Wood, Nathaniel was sealed away into a place called Purgatory. After ninety-one years, he managed to escape, only to land in 21st century Antioch. He now relies on Eire to get him through his life, both physically and emotionally.
